A Small Fall Haul

a small fall hail

The chillier temperatures, changing leaves, and cloudy skies can only mean one thing: it’s fall! I apologize for my absence last month. In the midst of starting my second year of college, moving into a new apartment, and starting a new job, I have been taking some time to figure myself out. But I’m back today to share a few fall-inspired items I purchased recently!

ModCloth Harvest Fest Coat in Vermillion

Product listing here. And if you are a college student I recommend taking advantage of the 10% Modcloth Student Discount!

This coat was more expensive than I would have liked, but I am so glad I purchased it. Complete with a warm, reddish-orange color, cute toggles, big pockets, and a faux fur-trimmed hood, this is the perfect fall coat. And to seal the deal, it’s non-wool! The proportions are perfect: the sleeves are long enough to cover my half of my hands, and the medium length of the coat is extremely flattering. My only complaint is that the faux fur trim flops over my eyes when I put the hood up, and it cannot be removed. But overall, I could not adore this coat more and can’t wait to wear it all season!

Bath and Body Works Leaves Candle

Product listing here.

I have heard many people rave about this candle, and after browsing the Bath and Body Works website and reading loads of positive reviews, I decided to give it a try. I love this candle’s pretty leaf-patterned bronze lid, and it has a lovely scent to match. Even when it’s not lit, this candle fills the room with a festive combination of autumn wreaths, cider, spices, and berries. I imagine this scent will be perfect for Thanksgiving time.

Bath and Body Works Pumpkin Pie Candle

Product listing here.

Candles were 2 for $24 at Bath and Body Works, so naturally, I had to purchase a second one…And of course, what would a fall haul be without a pumpkin scented candle? I picked this one because I thought the picture on the jar was adorable, and who doesn’t want their home to smell like a scrumptious pumpkin pie is in the oven? I love this candle’s a warm, sweet, vanilla scent. My only complaint is that I wish the pumpkin and spice undertones were a bit stronger.

Bath and Body Works Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin Foaming Hand Soap

Product listing here.

Since fall is the season of pumpkin-flavored everything, I have to complete my fall haul with one last pumpkin scented item: hand soap! This scent is described as “warm pumpkin, fresh cinnamon stick, & sweet sugarcane,” but to be honest, I don’t think it smells like pumpkin at all. To me, it smells sweet and slightly fruity with a hint of spice, but the soap does the job!

That is my short and sweet fall haul! I hope you are enjoying the autumn season. If you have picked up some fall-inspired goodies lately, I would love to see your hauls too! 🙂

Jaunary Fashion and Beauty Haul

IMG_20150131_201210161I did some shopping this month and picked up some cute fashion and beauty items. I am excited to share them with you, so let’s get into the haul!

Black Dress

I found this cute black dress at PacSun. I love the flowy, off the shoulder sleeves. The dress is quite loose, but still flattering. The buttons and the thin crochet insets give it an element of dimension. I love the way this dress looks with black tights and black boots.

Black Long Sleeved Tee

PacSun was having a buy one get one free sale, so I got this for free along with the dress. I probably would not have purchased this otherwise, but after trying it on at home I was very glad I did. I love the way the loose fit and tighter sleeves complement each other. I adore the elegance of the neckline as well.

Burt’s Bees Natural Acne Solutions

Finding cruelty-free and vegan acne fighting products can be difficult, but I really like this product. It contains salicylic acid and willow bark to help speed the healing of acne, yet is also natural and gentle, making it suitable for sensitive skin. I have been using it for a week and it has been helping heal the acne I already had and has prevented new break outs. Hopefully it helps me get my skin under control!

C.O. Bigelow Rose Salve

This was a repurchase. This salve is has been a staple for me and I have used it nearly every single day since I last purchased it. The first tin lasted about a year. The skin on my lips can become a bit dry during the wintertime, so I like applying this at night. When I wake up, my skin is soft and smooth.

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner

I have heard amazing things about this liner, which is cruelty-free as far as I can tell. (Kat Von D herself is vegan!) Hopefully, this product lives up to my expectations.

NARS Lip Pencils

I got these lip pencils as a birthday gift from Sephora. It was a pleasant surprise, as my birthday was over a month ago. I was worried the gift would be a from a company that tests on animals, but I was happy to find it was cruelty-free. The colors are Rikugien and Cruella. I love how creamy and smooth these lip pencils are, though they are not long wearing. I have been wanting to try a matte red and mauve pink for a long time, so this sample was perfect.

That’s everything I picked up this month! I hope you enjoyed this haul. If you have done some shopping recently, feel free to share your finds with me. I would love to know what you have been enjoying! 🙂

College Grocery Store Haul

This weekend, I did some grocery shopping. Since I live in a dorm, I do not cook my own meals. However, I do like to keep some food in my room. So if you have ever wondered what a vegan college students eats, keep reading!

Club Crackers

IMG_20141115_170323096These light and delicious crackers are great for snacking on! They go well with peanut butter, vegan cheese, or hummus! I grew up eating these crackers, so they also have a nostalgic feel.

BelVita Blueberry Biscuits

These breakfast biscuits are a great option for breakfast on the go. They are delicious (they taste like cookies!), portable, and filling. Most days, I do not have time to go to the dining hall for breakfast, so these are perfect!

Amy’s Rice and Veggie Bowl

I sometimes enjoy having a heat up dinner as an alternative to eating at the dining hall. I really wanted to get Amy’s vegan macaroni and cheese, but unfortunately, it was sold out. 😦  This was my first time trying it, and it made an amazing dinner! It was very flavorful, while still being light and wholesome.

IMG_20141115_170415638Hummus is a creamy and delicious spread made from chickpeas and tahini. It goes very well with pita chips, tortilla chips, pretzels, or fresh veggies. It also makes a great sandwich spread! I just got the plain flavor, because I couldn’t decide which to try!

Carrot Sticks

I bought these to go along with my hummus. Carrot sticks are my favorite thing to dip in hummus.

Blueberry So Delicious Coconut Yogurt

This is one of my favorite dairy free yogurts. It is made from cultured coconut milk. I purchased blueberry flavor, which is my favorite of the flavors they carry.

Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is one of my favorite foods. I love eating it with bananas, crackers, in sandwiches, straight out of the jar… (Don’t judge 😛 )

That’s all I got while out grocery shopping! What are your essential groceries?

The Frustrations of Vegan Makeup Shopping

frustrated bunny

This post was supposed to be a really fun beauty haul. Instead, I will be sharing the story of how I learned that cruelty free ≠ vegan the hard way.

So there I was, a makeup addict in her natural habitat, frolicking through the aisles of my local Ulta in search of some compassionate makeup. After much deliberation, I finally picked out some products from NYX. Being the naive little vegan I was, I looked no further than the reassuring cruelty-free bunny stamped on the products.

“Yes! The stamp of cruelty-free approval! I’m set!” Clutching a tube of mascara and an eyeliner, I headed to the checkout counter with confidence, feeling amazing about my new purchases.

Later, I began reading the ingredients lists on each product, and to my horror, both contained beeswax. I felt horrible! How could I make this mistake? I had completely forgotten that just because a product is cruelty-free, doesn’t mean it is vegan!  From now on, I will have to make a habit of reading the ingredients lists on my makeup, too, not just my food.

The Accused

The Evidence

The only difficult part about going vegan for me has been transitioning my beauty routine. So many products are either tested on animals or contain animal products, it’s ridiculous! Honestly, it feels  impossible to do my makeup shopping conveniently anymore. There are so many traps to fall into, it’s a minefield!  Just picking out a new mascara takes so much label-reading and research. I love being vegan, but my makeup collection does not.

Here is the rest of my sad little haul.

Mineral facial powder from Physician’s Formula

This powder was more expensive than I’d like ($11). Physician’s Formula is a rather pricy drugstore brand.

Benefit Boi-ing Concealer and Eyebright Compact

This has been my favorite concealer for the past year. When I first went cruelty-free, I looked up their animal testing policy and fell prey to this oversight: “We do not test our products on animals nor do we permit others to do so…” Sound’s great! But not so fast! They go on to say: “…except where it is required by law.” Meaning they sell their products in China. This is really sad news. 😥

Eco-Tools brushes

Let’s end this post on a happy note. These brushes are soft and amazing, perfectly affordable, and completely vegan too. I highly recommend them! 🙂

Your vegan makeup suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Hopefully, I will find some nice vegan makeup soon, or else I will have to begin making my cosmetics out of vegetables…

College Dorm Haul

???????????????????????????????As August begins, it is time for me to prepare for the next chapter of my life: College! Soon, I will be moving into my dorm and beginning my classes alongside thousands of new people in a brand new setting. The thought of this is both exhilarating and frightening. Though this will be my fourth year living in a dorm, I am still nervous about living in an entirely new environment!

Today, I did some shopping for my dorm room, so I thought I would share what I got. Hopefully this haul will help anyone else who is moving into an apartment or dorm soon!

Desk Lamp

Most dorm rooms do not provide adequate lighting, so a desk lamp or floor lamp is a must for college students. They are especially useful for late night study sessions while your roommate is sleeping! Mine also includes an organizer that will hold bits like paperclips and electronics, which is quite handy.

Shower Caddy

These are especially useful if your dorm have a community bathroom.  Mine separates into two. I plan on using the smaller clear caddy to store the items I would use in the morning (toothbrush, toothpaste, contacts, etc.) so I can grab what I need quickly and get ready faster.

Laundry Bag

If you are attending college far from home, you may have to *gulp* do your own laundry! A laundry bag will help you keep all of your dirty clothes contained between washes so they will not litter your floor and annoy your roommate!

You will need to bring your own linen, blankets, and pillows to college. Don’t forget! I also recommend bringing a mattress pad, as some schools have rather old and uncomfortable mattresses. My college has twin extra long mattresses, so be sure to check what size sheets you need!

This is an important item you don’t want to forget! Since towels take up a lot of space in a washing machine, you will not always be able to fit your towel into your laundry load. I recommend buying two so you have an extra  clean and dry one for those weeks when you cannot get around to washing your towel.

If you are attending college far from home like I am, you will need a suitcase for traveling for breaks and holidays. I recommend a medium sized one so it is not too heavy to lift into an overhead bin, but spacious enough to hold everything you need for a holiday at home.

Fold Up Chair

This isn’t an absolute necessity, but I have been wanting one of these in my dorm room for a long time. These chairs are super comfy and soft. Most dorm chairs are made of uncomfortable wood or plastic, so a plush one like this will instantly make your room a bit more homey.  I like that it folds up so you can conserve space if you have a tiny dorm room.

That’s all! If you are moving into a dorm soon, too, I hope this haul gave you some insight! College is getting more real for me day by day! It’s hard to believe I will be all moved in in less than a month. I’m hoping it’s true that life begins at the end of your comfort zone! 🙂

Thrift Store Haul!

I went thrifting this week and am excited to share what I found. In addition to being a fun and exciting activity, there are amazing benefits to thrift shopping. As much as I love shopping at chain stores, I recognize that mass producing items and transporting them all over the world pollutes the earth. Therefore, it’s best to reuse what we already have when we can. Shopping at local thrift stores instead of buying brand new things will make the planet happy, your wallet happy, and of course you will be happy! 🙂 So next time you’re in the shopping mood, try visiting a local thrift store instead of the mall!

Here is what I found while thrift shopping:

Shoulder Studded Sweater, Forever 21, $14

This sweater is my favorite item in this haul. The silver spike detailing on the shoulders drew me to this sweater, and I love its soft, loose knitting. I know I will be wearing this versatile piece all the time this fall and winter!

High Waisted Cross Print Shorts, Dollhouse, $8

These shorts caught my eye because they were brand new–the tag was still on! I adore the gray wash and high waisted fit. They are printed with small white crosses, making them eye catching yet still quite neutral. I am looking forward to pairing them with tights, tee shirts, and sweaters during the fall.

Blue and Gray Flannel, Fox, $12

I have been wanting some flannels for awhile now. I had a red plaid one in mind, but could not find one :(. But this blue and gray one is very nice as well! The material is thick and it fits loosly. I am planning on wearing this tied around my waist with some jeans, a tee shirt, and Vans.

Gray Floral Tank Top, Anxiety Cafe, $1

I am very excited about this piece because of its price!  This top is fitting and a bit cropped. The material feels soft and thick. I adore the dainty embroidered flower pattern! I plan on wearing it with some dark wash skinnies, a cardigan, and maybe some necklaces and booties.

Oversized Black Cardigan, Say What?, $10

I love the look of oversized cardigans, particularly those sold at Urban Outfitters. Since I would probably have to sell a few organs to afford those, this sweater is a satisfactory compromise! It is a size large, so it is very loose and long on me. I love the slouchy look of it, especially with the pockets in front.

Aviator Sunglasses, Fantas-eyes, $7

I need a pair of sunglasses, as I currently don’t own any, and I have been loving the look of aviators lately! This silver rimmed pair felt just right, and make me feel about 10 times cooler, haha!

That’s it!  I hope you enjoyed this haul! 🙂 If you have any suggestions for how I should style these pieces, please let me know!  And if you have done any thrift shopping lately, I would love to see your haul!
